     Management

When Mike Vining established Vining Management in 1995 he was keen to promote the management of capital projects as an art as much as science in order to emphasise the importance of creative and lateral thinking in the process of understanding and delivering to the needs of clients. Hence ‘The Art of Management‘ has always been our headline and philosophy.

Mike wanted to portray the visual aspects of ‘The Art of Management’ in the company image and literature and set about finding an artist who could portray this philosophy through  artwork. Mike contacted the University of Birmingham and agreed to  sponsor a competition to create this work offering cash prizes to the students who best reflected these values. The competition was open to the ‘fine artists’ and ‘graphic artists’ with some very ‘off the wall’ entries from the fine artists in particular.

An exhibition and judging was held in the University Art Gallery with invited guests from Vining clients and University staff and students. The winning prize went to Andy Whitlock (left). Andy drew a parallel between ‘management’ and ‘chess’ stating that both were strategic and set about animating chess pieces to portray them guiding the construction and development process. The results were 5 pieces of related art displayed at the exhibition. ‘The King in His Castle’ above, the ‘Queen Viewing the Plans’ below and a tryptych  of the ‘Pawns’, ‘ Bishop’ and ‘Knight’ also shown below.

After the competition Mike and Andy worked together to produce company images based on his winning entry and these have been used ever since with admiration from many quarters. They have also worked together  since on ‘The ‘Art’ of Christmas Cards’ with some fun results. Examples of these are on show at Vining’s UK offices along with some of the other entries from the competition. They also set up ‘Now in Colour’ which Andy now uses to promote his talent as a graphic designer in London.
